Why It's Worth Playing

1000xRESIST is one of those games best experienced knowing as little as possible. You play as Watcher, one of many clones living under a figure known as the ALLMOTHER, tasked with reliving her memories. That's about as much of the story as I'd give away.

The opening hours can be confusing, deliberately so. Characters speak as though you already know their world, and the game isn't in a hurry to explain itself. But stick with it. The writing and narrative structure are where 1000xRESIST really shines, weaving themes of diaspora, trauma and power into a sci-fi story that isn't afraid to take some unexpected turns. It's easy to see why so much of the praise has centred on its storytelling.

There's also something distinctly theatrical about its presentation. While mostly played in third person, the game occasionally shifts into first person or even 2D side-scrolling. Paired with its atmospheric art direction, these changes make for some striking scenes. It makes sense when you learn that Sunset Visitor, the Vancouver team behind the game, comes from backgrounds in theatre, dance, new media and performance art.

As for gameplay, there isn't much of a traditional loop. Most of your time is spent exploring, talking to characters and moving the story forward. If you're after engaging mechanics, this probably isn't the game for you. But if you appreciate strong writing, especially stories that aren't afraid to tackle difficult subjects, 1000xRESIST is absolutely worth experiencing.

Before You Start

The opening chapters are meant to confuse, so give it a couple of hours to settle. It’s also heavy. The developers’ content notes include body horror, violence, mention of suicide and abuse, plus a flashing-lights warning. It’s rated Mature 17+.
